Paloma Mocktail

Mmmm…..Paloma. Looking into the history of the drink, no one really knows exactly where it came from. At this point though, it doesn’t matter where it came from, but rather where it’s going….and its going straight to your tastebuds and belly!

I always found this a funny cocktail because of the name. For many inexperienced bartenders they may say huh? what’s that? Consisting of just tequila, grapefruit juice, lime, and salt; you could order a tequila and grapefruit juice or for the fun of just saying it, you can order a Paloma. Whether you’re at your local dive bar or on Hawaii for vacation, they will most likely have these ingredients, but like all cocktails, how’s it made will be very different.

This time around I opted out the tequila for orange juice and agave, to give it a virgin mocktail vibe, plus I used black salt instead of white kosher salt which was the cherry on top. Such a beautiful and pretty drink, no one will guess that it doesn’t have alcohol. One more way to stay healthy and clean, while still having pleasure and fun at the party. Say goodbye to lame sad mocktails, step forward Paloma!

Makes 2 Mocktails

The Goods:

  • 2 thyme sprigs

  • 4 oz fresh grapefruit

  • 3/4 oz agave syrup

  • 1 oz fresh orange juice

  • 1 oz lime juice

  • black salt

  • soda water

The Method:

  1. Pour a few generous shakes of black salt onto a plate. With a lime, wet rim of two tulip or martini glasses, then by holding each glass upside down, roll the wet rim until coated with black salt. Set aside.

  2. In a cocktail shaker, add a few leaves of thyme, grapefruit juice, agave, orange juice, and lime juice. Fill with 2-3 handfuls of ice, cover, and shake vigorously for 10-15 seconds. Put some muscle into it!

  3. Most cocktail shakers have a loose strainer on the lid, use this to evenly pour the liquid into both glasses. There should be some room left at the top, fill with soda water to the top.

  4. Garnish with thyme sprig. Enjoy with friends at happy hour or date night dinner!
