Spicy Chicken Sandwich Deluxe Dupe

Welcome to the Chef Bai Dupe Series, where we talk about the uncomfortable truths about large brands and companies, and what harmful ingredients are hiding in common foods and drinks. In this recipe, I go head to head against Chick Fil A, and highlight the Spicy Chicken Sandwich Deluxe. Instead of consuming ultra processed and harmful chemicals that you would find in the Chick Fil A spicy chicken sandwich, you can use this recipe to make this high protein and plant based tofu copycat.

If you order a spicy chicken sandwich from Chick Fil A, you may think all you are getting are a few ingredients. The reality is that you are actually getting a sandwich with over 50 ingredients, with many of them being man made chemicals. There are preservatives, dyes, fillers, that are wreaking havoc on your immune system and gut micro biome. Plus this one sandwich from Chick Fil A is loaded with sodium, and has one of the highest levels of sodium than any other chicken sandwich from fast food brands. (over 1700mg!) Not only is the sandwich bad for you, but the company itself is a huge contributor to the decay of the environment with it’s high demand for chicken factory farms. These chickens are forced to live in almost unlivable habitats, never see the light of day, and are pumped with antibiotics to make them grow unnaturally large, in an unnaturally short time amount of time, just enough to live to their slaughter date. Recently, Chick Fil A has come out publicly about their decade long promise and will begin using some antibiotics in its chicken, reversing its 2014 decision to use none. Here’s the link straight from their website. (https://www.chick-fil-a.com/our-chicken-commitment) These chickens when consumed by us, can give us a boat load of side effects to contribute to our harm rather than our health.

To add fuel to the fire, their ethos and corporate practices for being against LGBTQ+, and their donations to anti-gay organizations have been causing such a harmful environment for their customers and their employees for years. Your best bet is to skip the drive through, and make this at home!

Makes 2 sandwiches:

The Goods:

For the “chicken” filet:

  • 1 high protein tofu, cut in half lengthwise

For the dredge:

  • 3 heaping tbsp gluten free 1-1 flour

  • 1/2 tsp salt

  • 1/3 cup soy milk

For the crust:

  • 1/2 cup gluten free bread crumbs

  • 1 tbsp tapioca flour

  • 1 tbsp paprika

  • 1 tbsp garlic

  • 1 tsp salt

For the sauce:

  • 1/4 cup organic barbecue sauce

  • 1/4 cup cashew cream or vegan mayo

  • 2 tbsp Dijon mustard

  • 1 tsp agave

For the sandwich:

  • vegan cheese slices

  • romaine leaves

  • pickles

  • sliced tomato

  • burger/sandwich buns

The Method:

  1. First step is to prep the tofu. Grab two shallow bowls and in the one bowl, add everything for the dredge. Mix and set aside. In the other bowl, add everything for the crust. Mix with a fork and set aide.

  2. Take your two pieces of tofu and coat the tofu into the dredge mixture until it’s fully coated, and then press the wet tofu into the crust mixture. Make sure to get all the sides and edges of the tofu coated. Once breaded, add both tofu filets into an airfryer, and airfry at 400 for 15-18 minutes. Or bake at 425 for 20-25 minutes.

  3. While the tofu is cooking, grab a mixing bowl and add everything for the sauce, and mix until smooth. Set aside until it’s time to serve. When the tofu is almost fully cooked and crispy, add your slices of vegan cheese and cook for the remaining time to melt the cheese.

  4. To build your sandwiches, take your buns and spread a generous amount of sauce over the center, and then add your tofu filet with melted cheese, then top with pickles, tomato slices, and romaine leaves. Enjoy immediately while everything is still warm. Save this recipe and share with a friend to spread the word on this amazing chicken sandwich dupe!
