Tamarind Mango Mezcal-a-rita

I’ll be the first to admit that there isn’t much I love more than sitting on a patio on a warm afternoon drinking a mezcal-a-rita! Basically, it’s a margarita made with Mezcal. It’s smokey and when paired with the right ingredients, the perfect liquor for a cocktail. Mezcal is made ethically and in small batches, which is why I love it so much! This recipe is perfectly sweet with notes of citrus and rounded out with the smokiness of the mezcal.

We made a homemade simple syrup for this using leftover mango seeds and tamarind paste. You can find tamarind paste in the specialty isle of the grocery story or order online here. This simple syrup is obviously perfect for this margarita but will pair well with a lemonade, or even an iced latte!

This mezcal-a-rita is:

  • perfect for happy hour

  • refined sugar free

  • easy to make

  • so delicious!

Makes 2 cocktails + about 10-12 oz tamarind simple syrup:

The Goods:

For The Tamarind Simple Syrup:

  • 1 cup water

  • 1 cup coconut sugar

  • 2 tbsp tamarind purée

  • mango seed rind

For The Salted Rim:

  • 1 tbsp orange zest

  • 2 tbsp flakey sea salt

For The Margaritas:

  • 1 orange juiced

  • 3 limes, juiced

  • 1 shot tamarind syrup (1.5 oz)

  • 3 shots mezcal (4.5 oz) (or sub filtered water/non-alcoholic spirit)

  • soda water

  • orange slice garnish

The Method:

  1. This recipe is a two part recipe. If you are using a mango for anything particular, instead of throwing out the middle seed afterwards, save it specifically for this recipe.

  2. Grab a medium sized sauce pan and pour in the water, coconut sugar, tamarind paste, and the mango seed. Cook on medium low heat for 12-15 minutes until all the sugar dissolves and the liquid has reduced slightly. Afterwards set aside and let it cool.

  3. Next, take a mortar and pestle and grind up flakes sea salt and orange zest until it’s an orange salty crumble. Pour this onto a plate, and take your two margarita glasses and wet the rim with a lime or orange. Dip the rim into the orange zest salt until you have a salted rim. Fill these glasses full of fresh ice and set aside.

  4. Take a cocktail shaker (or mason jar if you don’t have one) and add the orange juiced, lime juice, tamarind simple syrup, mezcal and 2 cups fresh ice. Cap with a lid and shake vigorously for 60 seconds. Using a strainer, strain the cocktails into both prepped glassware. Top off both drinks with soda water and garnish with an orange slice. Enjoy immediately while the ice is fresh.
